Waldorf Astoria Red Cake

Ingredients
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 oz. red food coloring
  • 1 oz. water
  • 2 tbsp cocoa
  • 2 eggs, unbeaten
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 1/4 cup flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 tbsp vinegar
  • 1 tsp soda
  • Frosting:
  • 3 tbsp flour
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla
Directions
  • Cream shortening and sugar. Beat in eggs. Make paste of cocoa, food coloring and water and add to creamed mixture. Add buttermilk alternately with flour. Add vanilla. Mix soda with vinegar in same cup as cocoa mixture. Blend instead of beating. Bake in greased unfloured 9x13 inch cake pan at 350 degrees for 30-35 minutes.
  • Frosting directions:
  • Blend flour and milk and cook, constantly stirring until white sauce. Cool. Cream sugar and butter. Add vanilla. Beat in cooled, cooked mixture. Beat and beat.
