Recipe: Mother Swanson’s Chocolate Cake

Ingredients

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 cup cold water
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup cocoa
  • 1/2 cup boiling water
  • 1 tsp baking soda

Instructions

  1. Mix sugar, shortening, eggs, baking powder, flour, salt and cold water together
  2. Mix cocoa and boiling water until dissolved
  3. Stir in baking soda
  4. This mixture should be stirred and bubble over into ingredients
  5. Mix and pour into greased 9×13 inch cake pan
  6. Bake at 350 degrees F for 30-35 minutes
