Minnesota Chop Suey

Minnesota Chop Suey is an excellent Minnesotan twist on an eastern Asian dish. Call it comfort food if you want to but you’ll definitely want to try this recipe a second time.

Recipe: Minnesota Chop Suey


  • 1-1/2 lb ground beef
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 2 onions, finely chopped
  • 2 cups diced celery
  • 1 can cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 can cream of chicken soup
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 cup uncooked rice
  • 4 tbsp soy sauce
  • Salt to taste
  • Pepper to taste
  • 1 can bean sprouts
  • Chow Mein noodles


  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F
  2. Brown ground beef in butter in large casserole or Dutch Oven
  3. Add remaining ingredients, except chow mein noodles and bean sprouts
  4. Cover and bake 1 hour
  5. Remove cover, add undrained bean sprouts and continue baking 1/2 hour more
  6. Serve over chow mein noodles
