Bishops Bread

Bishops Bread is what I would consider an heirloom recipe. Don’t let the length of time between preparation and eating scare you away. This is a delicious bread recipe which would be a shame if it were somehow forgotten by current generations.

Recipe: Bishops Bread

  • 3 eggs
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1-1/2 cup flour
  • 1-1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 4 oz. bottle cherries, drained
  • 3/4 cup whole dates, firmly packed
  • 1 8 oz. pkg chocolate chips
  • 3/4 cup walnut halves
  • 3/4 cup whole Brazil nuts
  • 1 tsp vanilla

  1. Beat eggs and sugar, mixing thoroughly
  2. Sift dry ingredients together and add to egg mixture, stirring just until the flour is moistened
  3. Add fruits, chocolate chips, nuts and vanilla
  4. Pour mixture into 9×5 inch loaf pan which has been greased and lined at the bottom with waxed paper
  5. Bake in a slow oven at 275 degrees F for 1 hour and 45 minutes
  6. Cool slightly in pan, turn on to aluminum foil and lightly wrap
  7. Chill several days before slicing

  9. Makes 1 loaf
